🧠What you'll learn
01 · Greetings & everyday phrases → 02 · Introduce yourself → 03 · Pronouns made simple → 04 · Build your first sentences → 05 · Your 30-second challenge →01. Start with a Salam 👋
In Morocco, a simple greeting can open the door to a conversation. Start with these everyday expressions.
| English | Darija |
|---|---|
| Hello / Peace be upon you | Salam |
| Hi / Hello (informal) | Salam! |
| How are you? (to a man) | Labas 3lik? |
| How are you? (to a woman) | Labas 3lik? |
| I'm fine | Labas, l7amdullah |
| Thank you | Shukran |
| Goodbye | Bslama |
💡 Friend tip: You'll often hear Labas? as a quick way to ask how someone is doing. Keep it natural and don't worry about sounding perfect on day one!
02. What's your name? 🙋
Let's put your first words together.
ASK SOMEONE
Shnu smiytek?
What's your name?
ANSWER
Smiyti Ahmed.
My name is Ahmed.
Now learn these useful sentences:
- Ana men Mirikan. — I'm from America.
- Ana men Canada. — I'm from Canada.
- Ana men britanya. — I'm from England.
- Ana kanhder darija shwiya. — I speak a little Darija.
Change the country to your own and make the sentence yours!
03. Meet your pronouns 🧩
These small words help you talk about yourself and the people around you.
| English | Darija |
|---|---|
| I | Ana |
| You (singular) | Nta (man) / Nti (woman) |
| He | Huwa |
| She | Hiya |
| We | 7na |
| They | Huma |
04. The secret: Darija keeps it simple ✨
In English, you say "I am Ahmed." In everyday Moroccan Darija, you can simply say:
Ana Ahmed.
I'm Ahmed.
You usually don't need a separate word for "am" in this kind of sentence.
Look at these examples:
- Ana Ahmed. — I'm Ahmed.
- Nta Youssef. — You're Youssef. (to a man)
- Hiya Sara. — She's Sara.
⚠️ Remember: Darija changes with context. You won't omit "to be" in every sentence; this pattern is a simple starting point for introducing people.
05. Your 30-second challenge 🎯
Time to stop reading and start speaking! Use this template to introduce yourself out loud.
Salam! Smiyti [your name].
Ana men [your country].
Ana kanhder darija shwiya.
Labas, l7amdullah!
Say it slowly first, then try again without looking. You don't need to be perfect — you just need to start.
